Creating scalable and Flexible future-Proof Networks with Programmable Optical System-on-CHIP

Today network operators struggle with increased cost as a result of strongly increased traffic demand. For this reason networks need a paradigm shift in their management and orchestration. In the presentation, the network landscape and the main strategies that are involved and the role that EFFECT Photonics can play with integrated photonics will be discussed and presented.

Interview with Michiel Boermans

Question 1: What drives you?
My personal drive is to take part of the journey that takes photonics to the next level. Photonics is fun and it’s cool. Just to realize that ultra short light pulses make up more than 80% of our internet communication, is hard to grasp and therefor super fascinating and super amazing.

Question 2: Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
As a product manager I’m a bit in the middle between the market and the engineering. It’s the one spot where I see many things happen and that I can even influence a bit. It’s a place where day to day learning plays a major role and keeps me young!

Question 3: What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Certainly, I should advocate integrated photonics here. Just compare it with integrating transistors on a chip in the seventies of the previous century and see where that took us!

Question 4: What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Certainly, PIC’s will help reduce future cost and energy consumption of networks. At the same time they will enable complex communication technologies to become available at the edges of the network in an affordable way.

Question 5: What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Large scale photonic integration is not as easy as it may sound. Light is just not as forgiving as electric currents (when comparing to common IC’s). PIC design and manufacturing with high yields need a lot of learning and iterations, but we are now getting there, which is just super exciting.

About Michiel Boermans
After his BSc in Physics, he was part of the semiconductor laser development team at Phillips Research Labs where he worked on world’s first visible laser diodes. Leaving Photonics for a while in other B to B jobs, he got back into Photonics at Tyco Electronics. There he worked on VCSEL related products like low cost, short distance, high speed optical links. At the present he’s part of the Product Management team of EFFECT Photonics, where he’s the Product Line Manager for the Direct Detect Portfolio that comprises mainly of InP PIC based SFP formfactor tunable transceivers.

EFFECT Photonics delivers highly integrated optical communications products based on its Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical System-on-Chip technology. The key enabling technology for DWDM systems is full monolithic integration of all photonic components within a single chip and being able to produce these in volume with high yield at low cost. With this capability, EFFECT Photonics is addressing the need for low cost DWDM solutions driven by the soaring demand for high bandwidth connections between data centres and back from mobile cell towers.
